Changes to blood test service

As of January 2014, if your GP, practice nurse or community nurse asks you to attend for a routine blood test, you will no longer be able to go to Medway Maritime Hospital but can instead attend one of the community clinics or GP practices that provide a phlebotomy service in Medway.

Fasting

If you are having a fasting blood test, you cannot eat any food but can still drink plenty of tap water.

  • For Glucose Tolerance Testing (GTTs) patients should have nothing to eat for 10 hours prior to the test, and drink only tap water.
  • For cholesterol tests patients should have nothing to eat for 12 hours prior to the test, and drink only tap water.
  • For fasting lipids patients should have nothing to eat for 12 hours prior to the test, and drink only tap water.

Please take all medication with water, as usual, before your blood test. If you are having a fasting blood test, medication taken with food will need to wait until after the test.

If you take Digoxin and you need to have your blood taken, please ensure that your blood test is taken at least 6 hours after the last dose.

Glucose tolerance tests

Patients requiring a Glucose Tolerance Test need to fast for 10 hours prior to the test. Two blood tests are taken over a two hour period. Patients will be asked to bring with them and drink 395ml of original Lucozade as part of the test. At the time of the first test, until the second one, patients will be required to remain on site, seated and not eat or drink for the period of the test.

Glucose Tolerance Tests are available by appointment only. They are provided in both community clinics and in some GP practices.

Patients must make an appointment prior to attending a clinic.

  • MCH House, Bailey Drive, Gillingham Business Park, Gillingham, ME8 0PZ (Mon-Fri)

Please telephone 01634 891900 to book an appointment at either clinic.

Some GP practices also offer a Glucose Tolerance Testing service to their patients. Please ask your GP for more details.

Children’s blood tests

Blood tests for children (2-16 years of age) are available by appointment only at:

  • MCH House, Bailey Drive, Gillingham Business Park, Gillingham, ME8 0PZ (Mon-Fri)

Please telephone 01634 891900 to book an appointment at either clinic.

All other community walk-in clinics will offer blood tests for older children (no appointment required). But it is preferable that younger/more nervous children have a booked appointment. Some GP practices also offer this service to their patients. Please ask your GP for more details.
